After waiting since 2003 for a state title, Yorktown has finally returned to the top of New York’s Class B, lifting the trophy on June 7 following its win over Jamesville-Dewitt.

The Huskers got an early start to the game, taking the first quarter 4-0.  Dewitt came right back to start off the second, tying the game at four goals apiece.  The two teams swapped goals bringing the score to five each before Yorktown exploded with a trio of goals.  The Red Rams got two goals back before the end of the third to go into the fourth trailing 8-7.

By the midway point of the final quarter, Yorktown established a two-goal cushion at 10-8.  Dewitt found the back of the net with 49 seconds remaining, but after Yorktown won the ensuing faceoff, the Huskers were able to hold onto the ball for a 10-9 victory.

Despite a strong showing from Jamesville-Dewitt, Yorktown never once trailed in the game.  Luke Palmadesso was named the game MVP, winning 19-of-23 faceoffs, many at crucial turning points of the game.  Austin Fusco was awarded defensive MVP.  Both Palmadesso and Fusco are two-time All-Americans.  On a man-down situation, Fusco stole the ball on a stick check, carried the ball down the field, and scored to give Yorktown a 10-8 lead, which ended up as the game-winning goal.

Three Huskers scored two goals:  Nicky Bonitatibus, adding on two assists; Connor Vercruysse, dishing out an assist; and Nick Del Bene.

Now with its first title in over a decade, Yorktown ends the season with an 18-5 record.  The Huskers have earned their place at 20th in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings.  Going to the offseason on the highest of notes, Yorktown looks forward to defending its title next year.
